Three cheerful carhops wearing red, turquoise, and pom-pom quad roller skates carry meal trays between gleaming 1950s cars outside the Cherry Top Drive-In.

Chrome, Fins, and French Fries

It is Saturday afternoon in 1957, and the Cherry Top Drive-In is hosting a gathering of gleaming automobiles. Beneath the striped awning, five carhops lace up their roller skates as hungry drivers settle into numbered parking bays. Each carhop wears a distinctive pair: cherry-red skates, turquoise skates, white skates with pink pom-poms, black skates with silver stars, or cream skates decorated with tiny brass bells. Soon they are gliding between the kitchen and the cars, carrying five different savory meals on serving trays. During one delivery round, each carhop serves exactly one of the five bays. Can you match each carhop with their meal, parking bay, and roller skates? The bays form a single row, numbered 1 through 5. In the clues, “before” means a lower-numbered bay and “after” means a higher-numbered bay, regardless of delivery time. “Immediately” means the bays are next to each other.
