The Friendly Fright Carving Contest

The annual Friendly Fright contest had one important rule: every pumpkin lantern had to make children smile rather than scare them. Five carvers responded with expressive faces and storybook creatures, from a laughing pumpkin to a bashful goblin. Each carver relied on a different specialty tool and finished the lantern with a unique decorative accent. As the lanterns began to glow at the harvest festival, the judges discovered that their entry cards had blown off the display table.
