The Community Theater Prop Sabotage

Five equally suspicious community-theater actors discover a pink crown, torn treasure map, glued pocket watch, missing dagger, and rubber chicken among their sabotaged props.

Opening Night

Five short productions were sharing the Hollowbrook Community Theater stage on opening night. Amelia, Ben, Clara, Daniel, and Evelyn each appeared in a different play and depended on one important prop. Minutes before curtain, all five props were found deliberately sabotaged: one had vanished, one had been replaced, one was broken, one was painted, and one was glued.

The First Discoveries

Evelyn, still holding her Moonlight Manor script, discovered that the production's treasure map had been torn neatly in two. Across the hall, Ben could not open the pocket watch needed for The Clockwork Heart; someone had glued its cover shut. The prop master muttered that the missing item belonged to Murder at Midnight, while The Pirate Queen's essential prop had been painted a dazzling shade of pink.

Backstage Questions

Amelia insisted she was appearing in neither Murder at Midnight nor Romeo Revisited. Daniel said his role required neither a crown nor a love letter. The director confirmed that the dagger belonged in Murder at Midnight, the crown in The Pirate Queen, and the love letter in Romeo Revisited. She also remembered handing Clara neither the dagger nor the crown during rehearsal.

One Detail Too Many

The remaining damaged prop had been replaced with a rubber chicken. Before anyone else knew which prop had been swapped, one actor joked that the romantic scene would get the biggest laugh of the festival. The theater manager quietly noted the remark. The saboteur had tampered with their own prop to create an alibi, and their prop was the one replaced with the ridiculous substitute.
